Pre-Diabetes: Breaking the cycle

A Personal Reflection

Sometimes the hardest part of improving our health is knowing where to start. Pre-diabetes can feel overwhelming — but small steps really can change the direction of the journey.

Numbers, test results, lifestyle advice… it can quickly start to feel like too much.

I understand that feeling more than most.

My mum lived with diabetes for many years. Over time I watched how the condition slowly affected her life. What started as small health challenges gradually became a difficult cycle — less movement, lower energy, weight gain, and eventually complications that made everyday life harder.

Like many families, we didn’t always understand what was happening or how to support change. Looking back now, I realise that it wasn’t about a lack of care — it was about overwhelm, habits, and not always knowing where to start.

When someone feels tired, discouraged or stuck, even small changes can feel impossible.

Sadly, my mum passed away in December 2023, and like many people who lose someone they love, I sometimes wish I had known then what I know now.

But that experience also became a turning point for me.

It strengthened my belief that health change doesn’t come from pressure or guilt. It comes from support, encouragement and small manageable steps.

The Vicious Circle Many People Experience

For many people, health challenges can create a cycle that looks something like this:

Low energy → less movement
Less movement → weight gain
Weight gain → lower motivation
Lower motivation → reaching for quick, convenient foods

Over time, this can affect blood sugar balance and increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

But the important thing to understand is this:

Cycles can be reversed.

And it rarely starts with dramatic changes.

It usually begins with one small step.

Turning the Circle in a New Direction

In nutrition and health coaching, we often focus on simple foundations that support energy and balance.

Small steps might include:

A Simple Pre-Diabetes Starting Checklist

Small steps can create meaningful change. You don’t have to do everything at once — just begin with one or two.

✔ Start the day with a balanced breakfast

✔ Add one extra portion of vegetables

✔ Take a 10-minute walk outdoors

✔ Swap one ultra-processed snack

✔ Drink more water

✔ Aim for consistent sleep times

✔ Be kind to yourself — progress is built through small, sustainable changes

Sometimes the first step is simply deciding that change is possible.

None of these steps need to be perfect.

What matters is building momentum.

One small change often leads to another.

A Different Message About Pre-Diabetes

Pre-diabetes isn’t just a warning sign.

It can also be an opportunity.

An opportunity to pause, reset and gently shift habits in a direction that supports long-term wellbeing.

You don’t have to do everything at once.

And you certainly don’t have to do it alone.

Final Thoughts

If there is one thing my mum’s experience taught me, it is this:

Health journeys are not about blame.

They are about support, understanding and progress over time.

Small steps really do matter.

And sometimes, those small steps can change the direction of the whole story.
